MCCA Scholarships

PURPOSE AND GENERAL INFORMATION

 

The Rodney Chin Memorial Scholarship Award provides a $1000 cash scholarship to recognize a well-qualified MCCA high school or college student who demonstrates:

• an interest in and commitment to Chinese/Asian culture

• academic achievement

• community service, and

• leadership potential

 

Marin Chinese Cultural Association (MCCA), located in Marin County, California, the scholarship sponsor, is a non-profit 501c(3) whose mission is to promote the understanding, appreciation, and preservation of all aspects of Chinese culture, including the language, history, customs, music, art, and cuisine of the Chinese and Chinese-American people. 

 

Yet Wah Restaurant, in San Rafael, is a co-sponsor of this scholarship.

ELIGIBILITY

 

Membership:  Applicant must have been a member of the Marin Chinese Cultural Association (MCCA) for at least one year prior to application.  Applicant must be either a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen with a registration card or equivalent documentation.

 

School Enrollment:  Applicant must attend an accredited or state-approved high school, follow a state-sanctioned high-school equivalent independent education program, or be enrolled in an undergraduate academic program leading to a degree.

 

Chinese/Asian Literacy:  Applicant must demonstrate an interest in and commitment to Asian culture through active engagement in formal study of language, fine arts, performing arts, martial arts, or history.

 

Achievement:  Applicant must demonstrate strong academic achievement and/or show motivation, perseverance, and interest in academic success.

 

Leadership:  Applicant should have a history of leadership in their personal, community, and/or academic life, as opportunity allows.

 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

 

All applicants are required to complete an MCCA Award application, which includes

• a personal statement

• a transcript, and

• two letters of recommendation from teachers, coaches, or work supervisors. 

 

Email your application and all supporting documents to the MCCA Scholarship Committee (scholarships@marinchineseculture.com).

 

Notes:

• We will accept recommendation letters written for other purposes—as long as they reflect qualities sought in the award.

• You may also provide recommendations from MCCA members with whom you have worked directly (ie: Lion Dance coaches, County Fair Food Booth managers, etc.)

The Dr. Eva Long Memorial Scholarship Award provides a $1,000 cash scholarship to recognize a well-qualified MCCA first-generation high school or college student who demonstrates:

• a commitment to community and community service

• academic achievement, and                     

• leadership potential

 

Marin Chinese Cultural Association (MCCA), located in Marin County, California, the scholarship sponsor, is a non-profit 501c(3) whose mission is to promote the understanding, appreciation, and preservation of all aspects of Chinese culture, including the language, history, customs, music, art, and cuisine of the Chinese and Chinese-American people.

This scholarship is underwritten by friends of Dr. Eva Long.

ELIGIBILITY

 

Membership:  Applicant must an active member of the Marin Chinese Cultural Association (MCCA).  Applicant must be either a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen with a registration card or equivalent documentation. International Students are welcome too.

 

School Enrollment:  Applicant must attend an accredited or state-approved high school, follow a state-sanctioned high-school equivalent independent education program, or be enrolled in an undergraduate academic program leading to a degree.

First-Generation Student: First-generation students are categorized simply as those who are the first in their family to attend college. They will be first in their immediate family to graduate from a four-year college or the equivalent.

 

Community Commitment/Responsibility:  Applicant must have a clear and consistent history of one or more of the following:

 

1. volunteer work benefiting individuals, groups, non-profit organizations, or schools;

2. work for pay necessitated by financial need.

 

Achievement:  Applicant must demonstrate strong academic achievement and/or show motivation, perseverance, and interest in academic success.

 

Leadership:  Applicant should have a history of leadership in their personal, community, and/or academic life.
